WHY USE SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS ?
Grid connect systems utilise the sun’s energy generate electricity. This reduces the draw from the
mains power grid. Any excess power that is not used is exported to the grid and you are paid
approximately 44 cent per Kwh. If the building uses more power than the solar is generating, the
grid automatically supplies the rest.
Grid solar power systems are not installed purely to save money as solar power is still more expensive
than fossil fuels.
However, there are many other reasons why we should use solar power such as
reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in our future, increasing the value of your home and
reducing your household bills.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The principle of operation is simple. The solar modules generate low voltage DC power. This is then
fed to an inverter which converts DC power to 240vAC mains power. The inverter controls the mains
grid and supplies power only when the correct voltage and frequency are present.
If there is power being used at the home, the solar power system meets this load first. If the power
being used by the house exceeds the solar power generated, the grid supplies the remainder. If there
is excess solar being produced, it is automatically exported to the utility network and you are paid for
this power sent in to the grid.
This power is monitored by an import/export meter which is installed
by your electricity provider when the solar power system is installed.
WILL MY POWER BILL GO DOWN?
Like many utilities around Australia, Origin and AGL in South Australia offer net billing, which means
that they will credit power exported to them at the full retail price. This is a great encouragement to
users as it allows them to get the full benefit of all solar power produced within each billing period.
What you save will depend on how many solar panels you have installed. For example, a 1500 watt
solar system will reduce your electricity consumption by around 6-7 units per day, saving over
$500 per year. This will also save around 2.4 tonnes of CO2 per year going into the atmosphere.
There are many ways to reduce you power bill is high such as high efficiency lighting and appliances,
sensors to switch lighting on and off, time delay switches, and simply only running appliances and
lighting when you need them like switch off you computer if you are not using it.
This will also reduce
your power consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve fossil fuels. Assistance
is available from the Energy Information Centres such as AGL , origin energy and other power retailer
websites.
WHAT SIZE SYSTEM IS RIGHT FOR ME?
For most people, the size of the system will be determined by how much you want to spend. The
maximum rebate is for 1000 watt solar system , most systems are between 1,000 and 3,000 watts. |
